Ubuntu resolution change at user login.

Back when upgrading my WUBI install of Ubuntu from version 9.04 (Jaunty) to 9.10 (Karmic Koala) I ran into the problem of my resolution settings changing from the default 1440×900@60Hz at bootup to 800×600@61Hz after logging in. My only solution at the time had been to open the nvidia-settings driver application after ever login and manually change my resolution and refresh rate settings to auto. Which eventually became frustrating and lead me to stop using Ubuntu on my laptop until Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) came out. Continue reading

Art with results… Mark Crilley, lending a hand to the rest of us.

I have always been a fan of the Anime and Manga style of drawing, and some of the best tutorials, or guides if you will, as of late have been tubed by author, illustrator, and western mangakan Mark Crilley. Easy to follow, and straight to the point Crilleys’ tutorials allow everyone from young to old enjoy the Manga style. Below is Crilleys’ latest tutorial entitled How to Draw Manga Hair: Curly Vs. Straight.
Is it just me or do the eyes of the character for the curly example remind you of Kuniko from Shangri-La?

And as luck would have it todays Japanese word of the day just so happens to be author, writer pronounced with the romaji: chosha, and the hiragana: ちょしゃ, and the kanji 著者.

I would place the kanji here though wordpress does not seem to want to accept it.
Fixed now, disabled the enhanced text editor in wordpress.

Rediscovering my wacom tablet…

A few years ago I received a Wacom Graphire4 as a present; for either Christmas or my birthday I do not remember. After opening the box I more or less played around with it for a couple months, and soon after grew both frustrated and tired with it. I found that after a minute of using it my hand would get stuck to the plastic surface, or the pen would slip. After awhile, trying to develop that sweet spot where the coordination with my hand, table, and monitor would be similar to that of drawing paper became down right impossible. So I had thrown the tablet in a drawer and forgot about it.

An Interesting Link…

APOLLO 17 LAUNCH FROM KSC COMPLEX 39.

Well searching for sources for a research paper I am currently working on I happened to stumble upon the NASA Technical Reports Server. There I found the image, to the right, titled Moonlit View of Apollo 17 on Launch Pad. The publication date for this picture is December 18, 1972 which was one day before the end of the Apollo 17 mission, also the last of the manned lunar missions to date.

Apollo 17 was tagged as the longest Apollo mission with 504 hours. It lifted off from the Kennedy Spaceflight Center, complex 39, on December 7, 1972 at 05:33:00 UTC and touched down December 19, 1972 at 19:24:59 UTC. Eugene Andrew Cernan was the Mission Commander accompanied by Ronald Ellwin Evans, Jr. as Command Module Pilot, and Harrison Hagan Schmitt replacing Joe Henry Engle as the Lunar Module Pilot.

Three years short from forty years later and we have yet to return to the moon. But progress is being made with NASA’s return to a capsule program with the Constellation Program.

I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on this, so feel free to drop a comment.
